Our world is evolving.

The truth is evolution occurs: 1) whether we recognize it or not 2) seek it or not 3) stimey it or not 4) control it or not. Change is inevitable. Our relationship with this inevitability, shapes our perception.

Evolution exists at the intersection of what is and what could be.

Some cling to the known, fearful that change could be dangerous. Safe in their what is, they scoff at ideas suggesting change. Is change inherently dangerous? No. It could feel dangerous if you perceive change as throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

Some thrash against the known. Their pioneer spirit calls them to explore change as what could be. Is staying the same inherently bad? No. It could feel bad if you perceive resistance to change as stifling new possibilities.

Throwing the baby out with the bathwater. Stifling new possibilities. Those are two extremes on an infinite perception of reality. Change/No Change is binary. It’s either/or.

What if Change/No Change is not mutually exclusive? What if we valued them as equally important ingredients in our favorite recipe?

If we recognized the merits of each - if we understood the necessity of their contrast – if we chose to pick both instead of one – we would synthesize an opportunity.

We can deliberately choose the best attributes of each and blend what’s working with how can it even be better?

Not everything needs to change. Not everything needs to stay the same. You are allowed to choose both.

Smudge the Circle

Fingers dripping with paint.
Relishing the smooth finiteness of your drawn circle.
Soothing yourself in certainty’s hologram.

Won’t you smudge the circle?

Your circle gleams in my sunlight
Reflecting “Return to Sender”.
Nothing in or out, your circle is airtight.
Exhausted prying open from the outside.
Nothing to cling to.
I sadly accept it’s an inside job.

Won’t you smudge the circle?

Magic permeability is the prize.
It alchemizes.
It transmutes.

It’s the breeze from an open window,
Shuffling false beliefs.
You struggle, clinging to them.

Won’t you smudge the circle and let them float away?

I exist outside the circle,
Surfing the unknown on a moving walkway.
Welcoming the lessons.
Sore from the growth.
Trusting it’s happening for me,
Not to me.

Your leaden feet pull apart our hands.
My soul protests the image in the rear-view mirror.

Won’t you smudge the circle so we can hold each other’s heart?
