Heart disease is a common diagnosis in people with diabetes. Signs of heart disease can also appear before a diabetes diagnosis, as in this case. Prediabetes is when someone's blood glucose levels are higher than normal but lower than those in people with diabetes. Although it may not always lead to diabetes, people with prediabetes should work with their doctor to make a plan to prevent a diabetes diagnosis later on. Through this prevention, many of the complications that accompany diabetes can be avoided.
Jacqueline didn’t think much of her doctor’s news that she had prediabetes. “If I had known then what I know now, I would have been a lot more proactive,” she said. But she now realizes it should have been an urgent wake-up call.
In 2012, Jacqueline had a temporary blockage of blood flow to the brain that’s often called a “mini -stroke.” A few years later, she was diagnosed with full-blown type 2 diabetes.
Her experiences inspired her and helped her realize health should be a priority. Jacqueline manages her diabetes and cardiovascular risk with lifestyle changes and shares knowledge with others, including family and strangers.
“My husband and I started this health care advocacy journey to help ourselves, but it’s really evolved to help our family and everyone around us.” https://bit.ly/4bmWj01
