Twenty-five years ago, The Freedom Center was founded on a simple but powerful belief: people with disabilities should have the opportunity to live independently, make their own choices, and fully participate in their communities.
Today, that mission continues through stories like Glenn Rhinesmith's.
After spending five years in a nursing facility following a life-altering stroke, Glenn was determined to return to the community. Although he was told he might never walk or speak again, he refused to give up. Through hard work, perseverance, and the right supports, Glenn achieved what once seemed impossible.
Today, Glenn is living in his own apartment and enjoying the freedom, dignity, and independence that come with having a place to call home.
Glenn's success is a powerful reminder of why The Freedom Center's transition services matter.
Our transition programs help people with disabilities:
- Move from nursing homes and other institutions back into the community
- Avoid unnecessary institutional placement
- Access housing, services, and supports that promote independence
- Transition from school to employment, higher education, and adult life
Every day, we work alongside individuals to help them live in the least restrictive environment possible and achieve their goals for independence.
As we celebrate 25 years of impact, we're reflecting on stories like Glenn's and looking ahead to the future. There are still many people waiting for the opportunity to return home, gain independence, and build the life they choose.
You can help make that possible.
Join us at Music with a Mission on October 9, 2026, as we celebrate 25 years of empowering people with disabilities to live self-directed, independent, and productive lives. The evening will feature live music, great food, community connections, and a silent auction, all in support of The Freedom Center's mission.
Here's how you can help:
- Purchase tickets and join the celebration
- Become an event sponsor and showcase your support for independence and inclusion in our community
- Make a donation to help sustain programs like transition services
- Share our anniversary campaign with your friends, family, and colleagues
Every ticket purchased, sponsorship secured, donation made, and story shared helps create more success stories like Glenn's.

Together, we can ensure that more people with disabilities have the opportunity to live where they choose, pursue their goals, and thrive in their communities.
Thank you for being part of The Freedom Center's story—and helping write the next chapter.
