Reflexology is a separate modality from massage therapy.

While many massage therapists may learn basic reflexology techniques in massage school, offering reflexology as part of massage can unintentionally diminish the depth of the profession.

Professional reflexology involves specialized education, typically 200+ hours of dedicated reflexology training focused solely on reflex theory, techniques, anatomy, and clinical practice. It is a distinct field with its own standards, certification pathways, and scope of practice.

Organizations such as the National Institutes of Health recognize reflexology as a separate complementary therapy and conduct research on reflexology independently from massage therapy.

Additionally, many clients specifically seek out reflexology sessions rather than massage because of its unique approach to supporting the nervous system and whole-body balance through the feet.

Recognizing reflexology as its own profession helps honor the specialized training and the therapeutic value it provides.

Changes of cerebral functional connectivity induced by foot reflexology in a RCT - Scientific Reports 02/26/2026

It's exciting that the new brain research is confirming reflexology theories!

Changes of cerebral functional connectivity induced by foot reflexology in a RCT - Scientific Reports Non-Pharmacological Interventions (NPIs) are increasingly being introduced into healthcare, but their mechanisms are unclear. In this study, 30 healthy participants received foot reflexology (FR) and sham massage, and went through a resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) to ev...

May 12, 2026. Note this important date on your calendar.

That’s the day reflexology will have an opportunity for a giant step towards credibility.

May 12 Dr. Stefan Posse, lead investigator for Neural Pathways of Applied Reflexology, will give an oral presentation of preliminary results before 6,000 to 8,000 neuroscientists who work in medicine converging from around the world for a professional conference in Cape Town, South Africa.

An oral presentation is selected for scientific interest and academic rigor. It is considered to be more prestigious and more impactful offering increased visibility for the research. Members of the research team were excited to learn the abstract was among 20% of abstracts selected.

The research team could use your help.

We are in need of more funds to add more subjects and “add rigor” to preliminary results. While funds are in place to work with more healthy subjects at the School of Medicine University of New Mexico, $20,000 is needed to fund work stroke patients at the School of Medicine University of Minnesota.

Donate here to the non-profit unmfund.org (University of New Mexico).

Three rounds of brain scanning have been funded already for the research project that has drawn the interest from reflexologists in 94 countries.

The research team includes Barbara and Kevin Kunz, Dr Possee with the School of Medicine University of New Mexico, Dr. Essa Yacoub and Dr. Ann van de Winckel are with the School of Medicine University of Minnesota.

The professional conference event is the 2026 International Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine Annual Meeting & Exhibition, held 09-14 May 2026 in Cape Town, South Africa
