While you strive to give your dog plenty of exercise, don't forget that they need mental stimulation too. In fact, some dogs may need mental stimulation (and possibly help learning to settle and be calm) more than they need physical exercise.

Sometimes dog behavior issues can be greatly alleviated if we figure out how to better meet the dog's needs. Not the needs we think they have (for high quality food, comfy beds, 2-3 walks per day, fill in the blank), but the needs they actually have. This can mean anything from a sniffy walk around town or along a creek on a long line, to opportunities to scavenge safely, to a nosework class, or a sport like agility.

Looking for a fun, bonding (and enriching!) activity you can do with just about any dog? Try nosework! Great for dogs of all ages and activity levels, dogs like Kaia here who aren't very "sporty"/drivey, and dogs who don't (yet) have perfect manners. Kaia and I just finished our first nosework class with Fitnacity Dog Training ! The scenery isn't bad either. š All dogs have excellent noses and will surprise and impress you with what they can do.

Yes! I know that if your dog growls at you, it can feel like disrespect ... it is not! It's a dog trying her best to tell you she's uncomfortable, which has nothing to do with respect. ā¤ļøš¾
We're taught when we're very little that a dog's growl is an aggressive action, but it's not! A growl is how a dog says "I'm uncomfortable with what's happening right now, and if it doesn't stop, I'll need to take steps to defend myself." Except, you know, shorter.
If you hear a dog growl, don't think of it as aggressive, think of it as necessary warning - and then take action, STAT.
[image description: a menacing looking cartoon dog faces a startled cartoon boy. Text reads "when you hear 'grrrr' take action: Stop what you're doing, Thank the dog for warning, not biting, Assess - does this have to happen now? Take steps to make the dog more comfortable. Respect the growl!"]

Interesting -- and civil! -- discussion between one trainer who is reward-based (but wasn't always) and one who is balanced and uses e-collars in addition to other aversive tools/techniques. We need more open conversations like this. Because we're all compassionate, and we're all here to help dogs and the people who love them.
