Ever wondered what makes someone a first cousin, second cousin, or “once removed”? 🤯

I finally had someone explain it in a way that actually made sense… and now I can’t unlearn it. 😂

👇 Here’s the easy version:

🌳 First Cousins
Your parents are siblings.
✔️ You share the same grandparents.

🌳 Second Cousins
Your grandparents were siblings.
✔️ You share the same great-grandparents.

🌳 Third Cousins
Your great-grandparents were siblings.
✔️ You share the same great-great-grandparents.

🌳 “Once Removed”
This doesn’t mean “more distant”—it means you’re from different generations.

Examples:
• Your mom’s first cousin = your first cousin once removed
• Your first cousin’s child = your first cousin once removed
• Your grandparent’s first cousin = your first cousin twice removed

👉 “Removed” = the number of generations between you.
• Once removed = 1 generation apart
• Twice removed = 2 generations apart

💡 The cousin number (first, second, third) tells you which ancestor you share.
💡 The removed part tells you whether you’re in the same generation.

Quick Cheat Sheet
✅ First Cousins → Share grandparents
✅ Second Cousins → Share great-grandparents
✅ Third Cousins → Share great-great-grandparents
✅ Once Removed → One generation apart
✅ Twice Removed → Two generations apart
