Controversial Opinions
1. Not Everyone Should Publish a Book
“Writing a book is an accomplishment. Publishing one isn’t always the next best step.”
Some stories are meant for personal healing, family legacy, or a private audience.
Question: Do you think everyone who writes a book should publish it?
⸻
2. Inspiration Is Overrated
“Waiting for inspiration is one of the biggest reasons writers never finish their projects.”
Discipline often produces better work than motivation.
Question: Are you more inspired by creativity or consistency?
⸻
3. Poetry Doesn’t Have to Rhyme
“If your poem only works because it rhymes, it may not be saying enough.”
Many readers still associate poetry with rhyme schemes.
Question: Do you prefer rhyming poetry or free verse?
⸻
4. The First Draft Is Supposed to Be Bad
“If you’re trying to write a perfect first draft, you’re actually writing slower.”
Perfectionism is often procrastination wearing a fancy outfit.
Question: Do you edit while you write or wait until the end?
⸻
5. Not Every Writer Needs an MFA or Degree
“Some of the best writers learned through reading, practice, and life experience.”
Formal education helps, but it isn’t the only path.
Question: Is talent taught or developed?
⸻
6. Social Media Is Not the Problem
“Many writers say social media is distracting. The real issue is avoiding the work.”
That one always sparks debate.
Question: Does social media help your writing or hurt it?
⸻
7. Reading More Won’t Automatically Make You a Better Writer
“At some point, you have to stop consuming and start creating.”
A lot of writers stay in learning mode forever.
Question: Which do you spend more time doing—reading or writing?
⸻
8. Your Story Doesn’t Need a Tragic Backstory to Matter
“Ordinary lives contain extraordinary lessons.”
People often think their experiences aren’t interesting enough.
Question: Do you think everyday stories are powerful enough for a book?
⸻
9. Faith-Based Writing Doesn’t Have to Sound Like a Sermon
“Sometimes the strongest faith message is shown through a story, not a lesson.”
This one creates thoughtful discussion among faith-centered audiences.
Question: What makes faith-based writing impactful to you?
⸻
10. Finishing a Book Is More Important Than Starting One
“Starting is exciting. Finishing is what changes your life.”
Many people have book ideas. Few have completed manuscripts.
Question: What’s harder for you—starting or finishing?
⸻
Bonus Hot Take
“Writer’s block usually isn’t a lack of ideas. It’s fear of judgment.”
That one tends to get people talking because almost every writer has experienced it.
Question: Is writer’s block real, or is it something else entirely?
The Biggest Mistake New Writers Make (And How to Avoid It)
Many people believe writing starts when inspiration arrives.
It doesn’t.
Writing starts with paying attention.
Paying attention to the conversation that stayed with you long after it ended.
Paying attention to the lesson you learned the hard way.
Paying attention to the memory that keeps resurfacing.
One of the biggest mistakes I see new writers make is waiting until they feel “ready” to write.
The truth?
Most powerful writing is discovered through the process—not before it.
The first draft isn’t supposed to be perfect.
It’s supposed to exist.
That’s why I encourage writers to focus on progress over perfection. Give yourself permission to write the messy version first. You can revise a rough draft. You can’t revise a blank page.
Here are three simple ways to strengthen your writing today:
✍️ Keep a running list of ideas in your phone.
✍️ Write for ten minutes without editing yourself.
✍️ Read your work aloud to catch places where your voice naturally shines.
Every published author, poet, and storyteller started with a first draft.
The difference isn’t talent.
It’s consistency.
What is one story, lesson, or experience you’ve been meaning to write down?
Share it below. I’d love to hear it.
