3 July 1917: Soldiers of the French Army salute as the Regimental Band of the 16th Infantry honors them with the French national anthem, "La Marseillaise", at the Reuilly Barracks in Paris. The 1st Division sent a battalion of the 16th Infantry Regiment to the French capital to conduct a 4th of July parade. This was to celebrate the relations between the two nations going back to the American Revolution, as well as the American Expeditionary Force's recent arrival to Europe.

June 29, 2006: Twenty years ago, the U.S. Army said goodbye to Kitzingen, Germany, in a military ceremony featuring cannon fire and the lowering of the flag. Sixty-one years earlier—on April 5, 1945, shortly before the end of World War II—the Army had rolled into the city with tanks amidst artillery fire.

Two units of the "Big Red One"—both supply units of the 1st Infantry Division—held a final flag-lowering ceremony at Harvey Barracks near the airfield (now the ConneKT industrial park) under the command of Major General Kenneth W. Hunzeker. German guests of honor were permitted to attend the event, which otherwise took place away from the public eye.

By the end of 2006, the last U.S. soldier had left the major district town. For six decades, around 3,500 Soldiers and roughly the same number of family members were based in Kitzingen.
