LRP policies work by allowing farmers to purchase a policy locking in the futures price of the market around the time your cattle will sell. Then if the live cattle market would happen to drop below your locked in futures price on the day the policy ends you will be eligible to receive a check for the difference.

This gives farmers the freedom to protect their investment while still allowing them to contract with kill plants or do off the farm cash sales without having to worry about the market when they sell.
