Ever heard someone yell “fore!” on a golf course? It’s not just noise, it’s a warning. Golfers shout “fore!” when a shot goes off target to alert anyone in the area that a ball might be heading their way, giving them time to react and stay safe. The term has been around since at least the 1800s, and while its exact origin isn’t fully agreed on, many believe it comes from “forecaddie,” the person who used to stand downrange to track shots and needed a heads-up when a ball was coming. Simple, loud, and effective, “fore!” remains one of the most important words in golf.
