Working with faculty, students will generate crucial ties that lead to sustainable relationships between undergraduates and professors. As a program designed to promote cancer research and community advocacy, the Cancer Research Program will bolster the research curriculum of FGCU and offer vast opportunities of involvement for students who wish to pursue graduate degrees. The Cancer Research Program allows students of all different backgrounds to come together and form ties rooted in the desire to support the community. Students from diverse disciplines involved in the program will learn important skills such as how to write grants, form community partner relations, seek local and national stakeholders, and host large scale events within the community. The guiding principles of FGCU have very much inspired the FGCU Cancer Research Program. As it reads in the FGCU mission statement and vision, “informed and engaged citizens are essential to the creation of a civil and sustainable society.” As a student run organization designed to provide real world experience for future students, this guiding principle has become the foundation of what we strive to be. As a multifaceted program, we hope to invigorate the curriculum by providing another outlet for student ingenuity and we hope to enhance community relationships through our service. Because of FGCU, we strive to become attentive alumni as well as life-long learners and leaders in our greater community.
