Continuing our Weekly History Tidbit: The Golden Age of the stagecoach was destined to be a fleeting dot in history due to the rise of the railroads to carry the mail as well as passengers. The Virginia Dale Station's owner Ben Holliday anticipated this happening and in 1866 and he wisely sold his entire Overland Stage Route. He sold it to the formidable Wells Fargo company.

Overland mail service continued along with the Stage Stations for another 2 1/2 years. When the Union Pacific and Central Pacific railroads met at Promontory Point, Utah in 1869, the Transcontinental Railroad rendered stagecoach mail service largely obsolete, bringing an end to a vibrant era in our country's history. The Virginia Dale Station remained, providing transportation to the Laramie and Cheyenne railroad stations. What a sad ending to a glorious time of legends and courage!

I'm going to start plugging another Historical Event happening in September. The "Salute to The Mountains and Plains- Celebrating Northern Larimer County's History". This is a joint effort of 6 Non-Profit Historical Clubs in the area. It will be held at the Livermore Hall on CR74E on September 12 from 11 AM to 9 PM. More information to follow!
