Russell started racing in 1958, driving quarter midgets. From there he moved into Drag Racing for 6 years. After 4 years of flat track motorcycles, he started racing Sprint Cars in 1974, along with Midgets, Super Modifieds, Modifieds, Limited Mods and Late Models, accumulating over 600 wins and 6 track championships.
