Retail sales in Canada are expected to have edged up by 0.1% in February of 2024, according to preliminary data. Considering January, retail sales declined by 0.3% from the earlier month, revised from the earlier estimate of a 0.4% contraction and trimming the 0.9% jump in the final year of 2023. Retail turnover contracted sharply for motor vehicles and parts dealers in January (-2.4%), the first decline in five months, as losses for new car dealers (-3%) offset the gain for those offering used cars (4.5%). Such a drop also outweighed a 0.4% increase in core retail sales, led by higher turnover in sporting goods, hobby, musical instruments, and miscellaneous retailers (3%). Strong sales were also recorded in garden equipment and supplies stores (2.2%). From the corresponding period of the previous year, retail sales edged higher by 0.9%.
