God’s Greater Purpose in Broken Relationships
Genesis 45
After years of betrayal, slavery, false accusation, and imprisonment, Joseph stood before the very brothers who had thrown him into a pit and sold him for silver. Instead of revenge, he offered reconciliation. He wept openly, drew them near, and spoke words of comfort: God sent me here.
Joseph’s life was marked by deep pain, yet he never became bitter. He recognized God’s sovereign hand weaving even the worst evil into something life-preserving. What his brothers meant for harm, God meant for good—to save a family, preserve a nation, and protect the line through which the Messiah would eventually come.
This is the power of biblical reconciliation: restoring broken relationships by releasing them into God’s greater purpose. Just as God reconciled us to Himself through Jesus’ death on the cross while we were still His enemies, He calls us to pursue peace with others.
God is never surprised by betrayal. He specializes in revealing Himself in our brokenness.
Forgiveness is not pretending it didn’t happen. It’s choosing to see God’s hand and releasing the right to revenge.
Bitterness loses its power when we embrace God’s providence: “You meant evil against me, but God meant it for good” (Genesis 50:20).
Application:
Pray for the person who hurt you by name.
Take responsibility for your part (even if small).
Extend specific forgiveness because Christ forgave you.
Restore what you can—through blessing, provision, or renewed relationship.
Prayer:
Lord, thank You that nothing is wasted in Your hands. Help me to release bitterness and trust Your sovereignty in every painful chapter of my story. Give me the courage to forgive as Joseph did and as Jesus did for me. Draw me near to You, and make me an instrument of reconciliation. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
