Governor Ivey has temporarily suspended state sales tax on groceries from 5/1 - 6/30/26. County and city sales tax will still apply, but you will save 2% for 2 months.

NOTICE Temporary Suspension of State Sales and Use Tax on Food - Alabama Department of Revenue In accordance with Act 2026-604, the state portion of the sales and use taxes on food shall be suspended for the period of May 1, 2026, through June 30, 2026.

Two changes to report for state of Alabama sales tax effective 9/1/25.
1. Sales tax on groceries decreased from 3% to 2%. This is part of an ongoing push to eliminate state sales tax on groceries entirely. (Act 2025-305)
2. Exemption from state sales tax on certain baby and female items through 8/31/2028. The exemption applies to baby formula, baby bottles, baby wipes, breast milk pumping equipment, diapers, maternity clothing, and menstrual hygiene products. (Act 2025-304)

These 2 items only apply to state sales tax and do not effect county or local taxes.
