At least that's the way that Dave and John Schaefer see it. Along with Dave's son David, they make up the band called "Lazy River". This band performs popular rock and country classics at local events and parties. They find that music can transport you back to a different time. Maybe a song was popular when you had your first car, your first date, your prom, or that certain kiss. When you hear it
again years later you can suddenly find yourselves having the same feelings again. Music has always been a big part of the brothers' lives. Their father Jack played music with friends whenever he had the chance. He played just about every instrument you could throw at him, excelling at the fiddle. When he would get together with other musicians they would usually play old Pop tunes, Bluegrass, and Hoe-downs while the families would be there listening and being entertained. It was during this time that Dave and John got music in their blood. A couple of years later John at the age of ten started playing bass. Not being able to get a real bass guitar at the time he re-strung an old guitar with just the four lowest strings and learned (and performed a few times) with that. As the brothers developed their musical abilities they started incorporating more progressive Pop and Light Rock songs into their repertoire but they never lost the love for the old music that their father had played. A few years later they formed a group with their father and played a mix of music that touched people of all ages. The brothers were also in a Country band called "Kentucky Country" during the eighties. Around this time Dave's young son David (about three years old) started paying attention to the music going on around him. The next thing you know he was building drum sets out of pots and pans and playing them in his room. He had already chosen his instrument. The brothers continued to play music with their father until he passed away in 1987. After that they played together but not officially as a band until 1995 when they became part of "Classic Country", a band that was formed to be the house band at Deloris' Red Barn (now Sid's Red Barn) in Ryland Heights Ky. When the original drummer of Classic Country couldn't be there for an extended period of time, David, at thirteen years old, started filling in and eventually became the full time drummer. After playing as the house band for eighteen months the band decided it was time to take outside jobs. They started playing fairs, events, and private parties. Feeling that the name Classic Country was somewhat restrictive, as they were also playing Rock and Pop music, the band decided on a name change. The idea was to keep the feeling of the country without limiting themselves to just playing one type of music. The band became "Lazy River" which can mean many things. To one person it may conjure up images of lying back at a fishing hole while another may think of Dixieland music on the bayou. As the name has many images that it can convey, the band performs a variety of music that gives the listener ample opportunity to get into that time machine.
