when my eldest was 3 we put him in a small local preschool. they held parent teacher meetings every 3 months and at each one they told us that he was behind. couldn’t count as high as the other kids. that he was a disruption to the class because he didn’t want to sit in a circle for 20 minutes. that we needed to practice at home working on his focus and gradually increasing his attention span.

he was three.

we didn’t know better.

until the feedback started to eat away at me and we decided to change schools. and that experience, for me as a mother, was such a catalyst for shifting my perspectives on education.

no child should be held to a standard or put on a curve. all children have the ability to thrive if given the right environment.

so this poem, another RWK original that I wrote, is for all those kiddos who are slipping through the cracks.
