The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, usually abbreviated as NAACP, is one of the oldest and most influential civil rights organizations in the United States. Its mission is to “to ensure the political, educational, social, and economic equality of rights of all persons and to eliminate racial hatred and racial discrimination.” Its name, retained in accord with tradition, is one of the last surviving uses of the
term “colored people.”
In 1905 a group of African Americans gathered to discuss challenges facing the black community. By 1909 the group incorporated and became known as the NAACP. In 1914 the NAACP had 6,000 members and 50 branches. They were influential in winning the right to have African American’s serve in World War II.
