🚨🐾 PET OWNER ALERT: WHAT IS NEW WORLD SCREWWORM? 🐾🚨
You may have seen recent news reports about the New World Screwworm (NWS), a dangerous parasite that affects animals. While there are currently NO cases in Michigan, veterinarians across the country are encouraging pet owners to stay informed and vigilant.
🔍 WHAT IS IT?
Unlike typical maggots that feed on dead tissue, New World Screwworm larvae feed on healthy, living tissue. Adult flies lay eggs in open wounds, cuts, surgical sites, or irritated skin. Once the eggs hatch, the larvae burrow into the tissue, causing painful and potentially life-threatening wounds if left untreated.
⚠️ SIGNS TO WATCH FOR:
• Wounds that aren’t healing
• Unusual swelling or drainage
• Foul odor from a wound
• Excessive licking, chewing, or scratching
• Pain, agitation, or lethargy
• Visible maggots in a wound
🛡️ HOW TO PROTECT YOUR PET:
✔ Check your pet regularly for cuts, scratches, or skin irritation
✔ Keep wounds clean and monitored
✔ Follow all post-surgical care instructions carefully
✔ Seek veterinary care promptly for any wound that appears infected or isn’t healing properly
The good news is that early detection and treatment are highly effective.
At Veterinary Medical Hospital, we’re committed to keeping our community informed about emerging health concerns affecting pets. If you notice a wound that concerns you or have questions about your pet’s health, we’re here to help.

🐾✨ Happy Friday from Veterinary Medical Hospital! ✨🐾
It’s Friday, which means it’s time for a little pet-parent roll call!
👇 Tell us in the comments:
What ridiculous nickname do you call your pet that has absolutely nothing to do with their real name?
We’ll go first…
🐶 Bella = “Princess Pickles”
🐱 Oliver = “Sir Floofington”
We know we’re not the only ones talking to our pets like they’re tiny furry royalty. 😂
📸 Bonus points if you share a picture of the furry (or feathered!) friend behind the nickname!
And if your pet is due for a wellness visit, vaccines, or this month’s wellness bloodwork special, don’t forget to check in from home!
Have a fantastic Friday and let’s see those adorable nicknames! ❤️🐾
