Not the best picture but this is why we need to watch calves closely this time of year, especially fresh calves!
Watch for tail swooshing, uncomfortable licking or biting sides/rear end.
This guy was caught just in time before the situation got way worse! In the second picture you can see the white specks, those are fly eggs and tomorrow he would’ve had maggots eating his skin. A lot of people shave their butt at birth so the flys don’t have a spot to lay their eggs. Highlands have so much hair though so you’d be taking a pretty good amount of hair off.
Last year we had a calf born when we were out of town for a few days and when we got home they were all over her sides, rear end, arm pits and under her tail. I personally like to start off with a comb, spray them out with water, soap, spray vetericyn plus and give a shot of ivermectin if it’s really bad! (We did have a vet come out for that one but he said we were doing everything right and to just keep doing that and watch her, she came out of it just fine and I’m still in contact with the new owner!)
All that to say just make sure you watch your babies closely and I hate flys with a passion!🙃🤍
