Today, on International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, we recognize the impact substance use and illegal drug trafficking have on individuals, families, and communities worldwide.

Illicit drug trafficking contributes to community violence, unsafe substances entering neighborhoods, increased overdose risk, exploitation, and barriers to public health and safety. The growing presence of fentanyl and other synthetic substances has made the drug supply increasingly unpredictable and dangerous, affecting people across all backgrounds and communities.

At the same time, substance use disorders are health conditions — not moral failures. Many individuals struggling with substance use are also navigating trauma, mental health challenges, poverty, isolation, or lack of access to care.

Addressing this issue requires both prevention and compassion:
• Expanding access to treatment and recovery support
• Increasing education and early intervention
• Supporting harm reduction and overdose prevention efforts
• Reducing stigma around asking for help
• Strengthening community resources and support systems

Healthy communities are built when people have access to safety, support, and opportunities for recovery.
