Discovery Speech is a sole provider practice, where all therapy is conducted by Chris Buchanan, M.A., CCC-SLP. Chris is a nationally certified, state licensed speech-language pathologist. She has extensive experience serving the speech, language, and learning needs of children age 1-21 in public schools, private practice, hospitals, and birth-to-three programs. Although the practice is primarily pediatric, adults are served as well.

I will always love Corey. I hope his story can help grieving people of all abilities. I designed it to be like an assisstive talker but in book form, where non-speaking or limited English speaking teens/adults can point at what they may be feeling, thinking, or moved by. For the last WEEK I’ve been getting stuck in my 2 year old’s room for an hour or MORE trying to get him down for bed. We go in there at the right time but he’s just WIRED. And no… he’s not overtired. I thought of that. No dice. So did I resign myself to spending half my evening sitting in his room rather than hanging out with my wife and watching Hulu? OF COURSE NOT! I just threw a brain hack at him. We laid down in bed and I told him the story of his afternoon. Here are my tips to do that well: - speak softly, slowly, and calmly. Its bedtime not a pep rally -no surprises. The story is EXACTLY what happened, no matter how mundane -focus on the characters. Kids LOVE hearing about people they know IRL. Telling stories in this way can hold their attention while lulling them into a more calm state. Youre activating their hippocampus 🧠 to do essentially the exact same thing (organizing and storing memories) once they fall asleep. Try the hack and let me know if it works! And don’t forget to share with a friend! PS it was more like 30 min tonight but A LOT better than the nearly 75 min two nights ago! #parneting 08/07/2024
