We are blessed. Kristian and I are healthy, our house is fine and our neighborhood is fine. Our town, Swannanoa, has massive destruction. Our community is resilient.

Because we're without power, we limit our phone use.

We were out of town and couldn't get back until last Wednesday. Since Thursday I've been volunteering at my church, Black
Mountain Presbyterian Church. BMPC has been serving hundreds of meals daily to the community. We receive truck loads of supplies and are distributing them throughout Western North Carolina. For example, I literally witnessed one classroom fill up completely with blankets, empty out, and refilled again... All in 1 day.

When we landed at AVL Regional Airport, 5 Chinooks and a Black Hawk helicopter were on the tarmac. We are no longer surprised to see Chinooks circling overhead. On Thursday we met a FEMA team from Nebraska in Swannanoa. Most of our bridges are out and they were still conducting search and rescue. Yesterday morning I was headed to volunteer, and passed a brigade of FEMA trucks - more then 20 - from Maryland.

Getting water restored to WNC is going to be a massive undertaking. Black Mountain has power, the grocery store and gas stations are open, cash only. Swannanoa is without power, though some stoplights are starting to work again, so we are hopeful. Neither town has running water.

My heart is overflowing with the human kindness I see.
