Last night I performed “Defying Gravity” at Trilith for Junction Playhouse’s Stages Cabaret, and something in me shifted.
I wore a sleeveless black gown, striped socks, and my ruby red sneaker slippers, letting my HS scars show — and for the first time in a long time, I didn’t feel the fear of not being good enough. I just felt… free.
I’m so grateful Anna trusted me to music direct this project, and even more grateful that I got to sing alongside friends and share the stage with my current and former students. Watching them shine reminded me why I love what I do.
For years, I hid parts of myself — my arms, my voice, my confidence, my place in rooms like this.
But last night? I wasn’t afraid anymore.
Thank you, Anna, for giving me space to grow, create, and believe in myself again. 💚✨
Behind the song. Behind the runway. Behind the story.
Within one week, I rewrote lyrics, recorded vocals in Georgia, flew to New York, and watched my music come to life on a Times Square runway.
Two of my original songs — one about healing from abuse and one about battling chronic illness — became a mashup for the HS Connect Runway Show.
Seeing people walk proudly to those lyrics — showing their scars, their strength, their stories — was one of the most powerful moments of my life.
