On June 15, 1215, John, King of England affixed his seal to the Magna Carta at Runnymede. The charter established that the king was subject to the law and guaranteed certain rights to his barons, laying the foundation for the principle that no one not even the monarch is above the law.

The government of the People’s Republic of China announced that Chairman Mao Zedong would no longer receive visitors, fueling widespread speculation that he was seriously ill. This was one of the last publicly released photographs of Mao before his death on September 9, 1976.
