The Masterson Method, Integrated Equine Performance Bodywork
It is a unique, interactive method of equine massage in which you learn to recognize and use the responses of the horse to your touch to find and release accumulated tension in key junctions of the body that most affect performance. In contrast to most traditional modalities, it enables the horse to actively participate in the process of releasing tension. It is something you do with the horse, ra
Why Wednesday ~ My horse tends to have tension in the shoulders, especially around the withers, and is very sensitive and reactive to touch. Is there a technique that could help release tension in this area?
Answer: The Withers Wiggle Release is a simple technique that can help a horse release tension in the muscles beneath the scapula and around the thoracic vertebrae.
Using the lightest touch (think egg-yolk pressure), gently wiggle the withers back and forth while observing your horse for responses such as blinking, licking, chewing, softening, or a head shake. The key is to work so lightly that your horse does not feel the need to brace against the movement.
Patience is essential. Rather than increasing pressure, stay soft and allow your horse time to process and release. These gentle micro-movements can help release tension in an area that is otherwise difficult to access.
Watch Jim demonstrate the Withers Wiggle Release and see how a light touch can make a big difference.

Sometimes the fastest way to help a horse isn't to go directly to the problem.
One of The Masterson Method's core principles is to find first where it's easier for the horse. By working in the areas where the horse finds it easier to let go, it then becomes easier to help them release tension in the more restricted areas, which often begin to soften on their own.
That's why, when we do The Masterson Method, we work with the horse, not to the horse. That's where real change begins.

What does it really mean to let the horse participate in the process?
In this clip from last year's conversation, Jim Masterson and Patrick King discuss one of the core principles behind the Masterson Method®: using light touch, observing subtle responses, and allowing the horse's nervous system to guide the release.
As Jim explains, it's not about doing something to the horse; it's about creating the space for the horse to respond and feel safe enough to let go of tension.
As we look forward to another conversation with Jim and Patrick, we're sharing this excerpt from last year's Facebook Live event.
