Most people don't realize how hard it is to deploy a second-life battery system at a commercial site. You need Fire Department approval, city permitting, utility interconnection, UL 1974, and more. Four separate gates — and most projects never clear them all.

RePurpose Energy just did.

A medical clinic in Novato, California now runs on 200 kWh of second-life battery storage, solar on the roof, and multi-day backup power every time PG&E calls an outage. One of the first fully permitted, utility-approved systems of its kind in the country.

The batteries powering it? They would have been scrapped.

If you run a commercial building, cold-storage facility, manufacturing line, or data center and want to explore what this could mean for your operation, visit repurpose.energy.

1 dead after e-bike battery goes up in flames at San Jose apartment 04/11/2026

A lithium-ion e-bike battery caught fire inside a San Jose
apartment on April 4 and killed one person.

The San Jose Fire Department said these fires produce thick, toxic
smoke within seconds — including carbon monoxide and gases
dangerous enough that even firefighters require full protective
equipment to enter.

This is the fundamental vulnerability of lithium-ion battery
storage. Thermal runaway doesn't give you time. It cascades.

Repurpose Energy holds US Patent 12,176,499 B2 for fire
suppression technology using non-conductive liquid — designed to
intervene before thermal runaway reaches this point. Days later,
San Francisco introduced legislation to ban non-certified
lithium-ion batteries after 120 fires in five years.

the technology.

Most people don’t know how fast a battery fire spreads.

One cell short-circuits. Heat jumps to the next cell, then the next. In seconds, the entire pack is engulfed. It’s called thermal runaway — and it’s the biggest safety barrier in battery adoption.

We patented a system that stops it. A non-conductive fluid floods the module, boils on contact, and pulls the heat out. The fire never spreads. Only one cell is lost.
