From a conservation point of view, rag mat is going to be your best mat board option. This matting is made from 100 percent cotton and thus is naturally acid free. The only drawback to this type of matting is that it’s relatively expensive.

When considering permanently mounting a piece, keep in mind that the process cannot be reversed and should only be used for items of minimal value (inexpensive posters, open edition prints, and such). It will improve the aesthetic of non-investment pieces.
