Transitioning back to the farm allows me to see things I did not see before, it fosters a deeper appreciation for everything.
Right now I am fully enjoying the rain and moisture we’ve had the last couple of days, I am soaking it in as the forecast for the summer is hot and Smokey.
The garden is flushed with so much food: salad greens, kale, peas, collards, kalettes, flowers and so much more is coming on strong.
The lambs have been a highlight. I am starting to look at them closely. Roughly 10 days to evaluation. I am so happy with what I see. Undeniably the luster brought on by the Danish genetics we have used (thank you ) is a highlight of this crop of lambs. I have 5 fantastic ram lambs that I am eager to take a closer look at.
We are gearing up to attend the National Gotland Sheep Show at BSG.
I will be showing a few sheep/lambs that are sold and will leave from BSG. I am not planning on bringing any sheep or lambs that are not sold but I am happy to start a conversation if you are looking for a nice ram to move your flock forward and I could deliver at BSG.
Here is why I don’t take sheep back to the farm after shows: I have been a closed flock for 8 years and I was in the USDA scrapie monitoring program for 5 years. Holding my flock to the highest health standard is very important to me and for my customers. I pay really close attention to what comes on my farm with a thorough biosecurity protocol. Quarantining is just not enough for these « silent killers » that drive flocks’s health and productivity down over time. It is my personal choice to do things the way I do them.
The downside of this strategy is that I don’t get to show off some of my best lambs.
Last but not least, I am building inventory for the . Be sure and mark your calendar August 13-16th in .
Sorry for the long post, it felt overdue to check in with you all and share some of our farm highlights.
As always I welcome comments, suggestions and collaboration ideas.
Let me know what you are up to!
