"The impact of systemic racism, classism, xenophobia, and other biases was categorically absent when the concept of imposter syndrome was developed. Many groups were excluded from the study, namely women of color and people of various income levels, genders, and professional backgrounds. Even as we know it today, imposter syndrome puts the blame on individuals, without accounting for the historical and cultural contexts that are foundational to how it manifests in both women of color and white women. Imposter syndrome directs our view toward fixing women at work instead of fixing the places where women work." - (Excerpt from "Stop Telling Women They Have Imposter Syndrome." written by Ruchika Tulshyan and Jodi-Ann Burey of Harvard Business Review in February 2021.)⁣

Many of us don't fully understand the history behind the concept of "imposter syndrome." This is why I always put "imposter syndrome" in quotation marks... because what if it's NOT "imposter syndrome"? What if a professional is actually experiencing racism, sexism, or something else that's attributed to the workplace environment and/or dynamics with colleagues? I highly recommend giving this article a read (link in my bio). Once you're done, let me know what you think in the comments section below!

I encourage clients to embrace their interests and incorporate their passions into the healing process of therapy. Here's one example of how Pokémon may find its way into treatment planning!⁣

Numerous studies have shown that exercise can help improve symptoms of depression; however, someone who is struggling with depression may experience low energy and motivation, which hinders their ability to exercise regularly. Pokémon Go can make a potentially boring and challenging activity more fun and rewarding. It also introduces a social component when played with friends, which is great for those who tend to isolate themselves when experiencing depression!⁣

As we recognize the contributions and achievements of American workers, I invite you to resolve to be mindful about Labor Day... especially if you're an entrepreneur or other professional who doesn't have a "typical" work week!⁣⁣
⁣⁣
If you can't take today off from work, then commit to taking another day off from work, or two half-days off from work, or whatever you can manage to do in the name of achieving a healthy work-life balance and avoiding burnout.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
If you have the day off but are distracted by reminders about work-related tasks, then consider turning off notifications for emails or setting your phone aside for a few hours in order to be fully present with yourself and your loved ones.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
