When we design a landscape, we always include specimen plants. These are the plants that have a little extra personality and can be used to draw attention to a special feature, such as a pool, or can be a focal point all on their own. Leucospermum is one of my favorite specimen plants. Their blooms last for months and can last in a vase for weeks! While they aren’t native to California, they are still a great option for low-water gardens. What is your favorite low-water plant? Let us know in the comments below!

Pumping out some area photos of our full property project in Solana Beach. This first area is the main garden where the homeowners spend most of their time.

We purchased and planted thousands of dollars worth of ca native plants, built garden beds, put in new dg and rock walkways, redid some wood edging, oversaw a 25+ yard spray on mulch application, moved a crap ton of rocks and boulders, overhauled the irrigation and finally put in a .socal Hydrawise timer to run the show.

This was three phases of work spread out over 9 months. We planned it like this to make sure plants were going in at the right time of year and I couldn’t be happier with the results! As always, we used one gallon plants for better long term results and to stretch the budget.
