🧠💫 What is EMDR Therapy—and how can it help?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based therapy designed to help people process and heal from distressing or traumatic experiences that feel “stuck” in the brain.

When something overwhelming happens, the brain doesn’t always store the memory in a healthy way. EMDR can help the brain reprocess those memories so they feel less intense, less triggering, and more manageable over time.

✨ People often seek EMDR for:
• Trauma or PTSD
• Anxiety and panic symptoms
• Childhood distress or attachment wounds
• Grief and loss
• Disturbing life experiences that still feel “fresh”

Unlike traditional talk therapy alone, EMDR uses structured sets of bilateral stimulation (often guided eye movements or tapping) while you briefly focus on a memory in a safe, therapeutic setting. You can think of this process as helping your brain 'refile' the memory in a more adaptive way, so it becomes less emotionally overwhelming over time.

Healing doesn't erase what happened—it helps the memory have less impact on your life today.

If you’ve ever felt like “I know I’m safe now, but my body doesn’t believe it,” EMDR may be a supportive option to explore with a licensed mental health professional trained in EMDR.

đź’™ Our practice is fortunate to have several counselors who are trained in EMDR and are here to help clients determine whether this approach is a good fit for their unique needs.
