Preparing for the Unthinkable: Rural Colorado officers train for school shooting scenarios Preparing for the unthinkable: Rural Colorado law enforcement officers train for school shooting scenarios
Last week, law enforcement officers from across rural Colorado came together to train for one of the worst-case scenarios imaginable: an Active Killer event.
This training focused on rapid response, movement to the threat, CQB fundamentals, rescue coordination, force-on-force scenarios, and decision-making under stress. The reality is simple: in many rural communities, the first officers on scene may be minutes away from additional resources and must be prepared to act immediately to stop the killing and save lives.
Through a grant supporting school safety initiatives, this training is provided free of charge to law enforcement agencies. Bringing high-level training to rural Colorado removes financial barriers and helps ensure even the smallest agencies have access to realistic, modern training.
These classes are about more than tactics. They are about protecting schools, churches, hospitals, main streets, and the communities we swore to serve. Rural agencies often face unique challenges including limited manpower, long response times, and fewer training opportunities. That is why bringing this training directly to rural Colorado matters.
Strong partnerships, motivated officers, and realistic training save lives. We are grateful to every agency, role player, and host site that made this training possible.
Our children, teachers, and communities deserve professionals who are prepared to move toward danger when everyone else is running away from it.
