I find it appalling that military and veteran suicide rates are at a level that is, to me, epidemic! I find it even more appalling that our government appears to be “going through the motions” to take action. I commend those veteran organizations and individuals that have taken this to heart. Do we need high- level conferences and studies to see th

PTSD Awareness Month
As we close out the month, we must remember that PTSD continues. Check on your family and friends.
The Fourth of July holiday is just ahead, with the barbecues and celebrations. Keep in mind that fireworks can be a trigger for some. Be courteous. Enjoy the holiday, and remember the sacrifices made by others to ensure our freedom.
I hope you have a safe holiday.

PTSD Awareness Month
You don't have to be alone-
One symptom of PTSD is avoidance. The APA defines avoidance behavior as "any act or series of actions that enables an individual to avoid or anticipate unpleasant or painful situations, stimuli, or events, including conditioned aversive stimuli. "
Some examples of this are:
Avoiding people and even loved ones who remind one of the trauma
Feeling disconnected or distant from reality
Refusing to participate in activities that relate to the trauma (i.e., driving a car, visiting a hospital, etc.)
Not feeling pain or physical sensations within one’s body
Avoiding memories of the trauma
Shutting down emotionally and having a difficult time expressing love
Distancing oneself from activities that used to be enjoyable
If you or someone you know is dealing with avoidance behavior, ask for help. Talk to your mental health provider and discuss ways to cope. Learn to recognize the triggers that cause avoidance. Consider a peer support group.

PTSD Awareness Month
Peer Support
A diagnosis of PTSD is not the end of the world. There are effective treatments available, CBT, EMDR, Emotion Code, and Equine therapy are a few. Prescription medication is available from a professional. We are all human, and each one responds differently to a treatment. If you have a PTSD diagnosis, talk with your mental health provider about the types of treatment that can help you.
A peer support specialist is also an excellent way to help you cope with your emotions. Peer support is a safe way to be heard without being judged. Sharing your experience not only helps you, but it can also help others. Peer support can be one-on-one or a group; it can be informal and may help build your confidence and provide hope for the healing process. You are not alone.
