πŸ€” Figure It Out Friday!

Since you all know U.S. Cavalry history better than I do... for now. πŸ˜„ I've only been here since November, so give me a little time to catch up!

We're shaking up our Friday posts with something new.

Each week, I'll dig through the U.S. Cavalry Association's research archives and share a mystery artifact, insignia, photograph, or document. Your mission is to figure out what it is and why it's significant to U.S. Cavalry history.

Today's challenge is pictured below. πŸ‘‡

Can you tell us:
🐴 What is it?
πŸ“… What time period is it from?
⭐ Why is it significant?

Bonus points if you actually own one or have one in your collection. We'd love to see photos in the comments!

Let's see who our cavalry history experts really are. The answer will be revealed in Monday's post!

πŸ›οΈ Museum Moment Monday... a little late.

This week's featured artifact is a fascinating piece from our collection: a Model 1859 McClellan saddle replica, constructed in 1863.

This saddle represents the iconic Model 1859 design that became the standard U.S. Army cavalry saddle during the Civil War. At some point in its history, the tree was rebuilt in the Model 1859 style, preserving the appearance and function of this classic military saddle.

Like many historic artifacts, this saddle has traveled a long road before arriving in our museum. While we do not yet have its complete provenance, every clue helps us better understand its story and preserve it for future generations.

If you recognize details about this saddle, have experience with similar examples, or know of comparable pieces, we would love to hear from you.

Historical research is often a collaborative effort, and the knowledge shared by collectors, historians, and enthusiasts has helped us identify and document many artifacts over the years.

Thank you for helping us preserve and share the history of the U.S. Cavalry, one artifact at a time.
