The CVSA to hold the annual Operation Safe Driver Week between July 15-21

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) plans to hold their annual Operation Safe Driver Week between July 15 and 21.
Law enforcement officials across the country will be focusing on “unsafe driving behaviors” by commercial truckers and motorists.
Targeting “unsafe driving behaviors”
According to the FMCSA’s Large Truck Crash Causation study, unsafe driving behavior is the leading cause of highway crashes, accounting for 88% of large truck crashes and 93% of passenger vehicle crashes.
The agency’s Operation Safe Driver Program was launched not only to reduce the number of crashes, deaths, and injuries from accidents that are caused by unsafe driving behaviors but also to encourage safe driving practices in the country.
The annual program aims to improve the driving behaviors of all drivers in or around commercial motor vehicles through “educational and traffic enforcement strategies to address individuals exhibiting high-risk behaviors.”
The increased presence of traffic enforcers during the week of the event is aimed to target unsafe driving behaviors such as speeding, distracted driving, texting, failure to use a seatbelt, following too closely, improper lane change and failure to obey traffic control devices.
Operation Safe Driver Week 2017 — A quick recap
Last year’s event recorded nearly 59,193 driver citations and warnings to motorists and commercial drivers.
State and local moving violations made up 84.2 percent of last year’s citations and warnings, with speeding coming in second at 7.4 percent, followed by failure to use a seatbelt (2.6 percent), failure to obey a traffic control device (2.5 percent), and using a handheld phone (0.8 percent).
“Countless lives are tragically lost on our roadways due to unsafe, risky, inattentive or careless acts by drivers,” said CVSA Executive Director Collin Mooney. “In fact, driver behavior is often the most important factor in crashes. Operation Safe Driver Week raises awareness about safe driver operations in and around trucks and buses.”
Operation Safe Driver Week is conducted by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance, in partnership with the FMCSA and with support from industry and transportation safety organizations.
