Sadly, no more rockstars today
A traditional Thanksgiving feast, turkey, mashed potatoes, dressing/stuffing, a veggie side dish, is so complex with all of the spices, seasonings, butter and cream it’s difficult to pair wines with it. Not to mention that fact the turkey breast and mashed potatoes are quite bland (until the spices and butter) you don’t want of full bodied Cabernet, Merlot or Syrah with dinner. Go lighter, your tummy will thank you later after the desert course!!
So, to that end, today, we’ve come up with five wines that we think hit that sweet spot for your Thanksgiving table this year.
2022, Poggio Ezio, Colli Tortonesi, Timorasso, “Caespes”: The Colli Tortonesi in Piedmont is home to the glorious white grape called Timorasso. From Monte Giarolo at 1473 meters, five valleys and their rivers have formed over the centuries to encompass today’s Colli Tortonesi. A bouquet of stone fruit and white flowers greets the nose, with candied peach notes and a touch of lemon zest dancing alongside a subtle herbal and pine undertone. On the palate, this Timorasso is as lean and sharp as a blade, with tart citrus flavors of lemon and key lime dominating. A limestone note lingers on the finish, a testament to the unique terroir of the Colli Tortonesi. So happy to see this grape varietal get a little lovin’! $336.99/$30.59
2022, Champalou, Vouvray: Catherine and Didier Champalou both come from a long line of vignerons, Catherine represents the twelfth generation in her family to make wine in Vouvray, while Didier, from the Poitou region just to the South, marks the sixth generation of hid family to dedicate his life to the vine. The aroma delivers notes of pear, honeysuckle, quince and apple. On the tongue hints of beeswax, ginger, pear, peach and spice. Note the viscosity of the wine in the mouth. $30.99/$27.89
NV, Lucien Albrecht, Cremant D’Alsace, Brut, Rose’: 100% Pinot Noir. The flavors display nice strawberry and wild cherry fruit, with a touch of richness on the mid palate. It is balanced with dry, crisp acidity and complimented with a creamy texture and long finish. A fine mousse rounds out the wine nicely. Simply put, there just isn’t another sparkling wine that competes at this price point. $24.99/$22.49
2023, Domaine Fabien Collonge, Chiroubles, L’aurore des cotes: The 2023 vintage has proven to be a fine year in Beaujolais, producing bright, aromatic wines filled with strawberry and cherry notes and this wine shows this off brilliantly. From 40-year-old vines on granite, this youthful and bright Chiroubles shows off fragrant red fruits, pretty floral notes and a lifted, crunchy palate that finishes on a mineral and slightly herbaceous note. Highly recommended serving this wine with a slight chill for the best results. $25.99/$23.39
2019, Podere Le Cinciole, Chianti Classico: Le Cinciole’s annata is a perennial overperformer and the 2019 shouldn’t be missed. Despite long ageing before release – first in cask, then concrete, and finally in bottle, it takes time to come out of its shell. Seductive truffle and forest floor slowly waft from the glass then give way to scented lavender, sage and dark red cherry. It flows effortlessly and energetically across the palate, with nervy, citrussy acidity providing the backbone. Chalky tannins are in the background making for an elegant frame. $27.99/$25.19
