When my dad enrolled at Stanford in the 1960s, his family was shocked— they were all Cal graduates. Betrayal! Thus, I am the product of both, and the rivalry runs in my blood. Berkeley is the state’s first land grant university, now one of the ten schools in the University of California system. Perched atop the hills of the East Bay, it is nothing short of impressive. You can list the NCAA champs and Olympic medalists, the depth and breadth of research accomplishments, and the Nobel laureates and Pulitzer Prize recipients, but you won’t capture the dynamism of the campus without stepping foot here. Its 33k undergrads and 13k grad students are as diverse of background and identity as California itself, and Cal’s overall 11% acceptance rate and 97% one-year retention rate are evidence of the strength of the student body academically.
