MSU researchers are developing a new AI‑powered diagnostic tool to help clinicians more accurately evaluate skin and soft‑tissue infections — a condition that brings 6 million patients to emergency departments each year. Diagnosis currently relies on the “four cardinal signs” of inflammation, which can vary across skin tones and lead to high rates of over‑diagnosis.

With a $1 million NSF/NIH grant, emergency medicine physician Joshua Reynolds and computer scientist Vishnu Boddeti are building an AI model that uses high‑definition video and thermal imaging to detect subtle changes invisible to the human eye. The team is also tackling AI bias and privacy concerns to ensure the tool works for all patients.

Partnerships with Corewell Health and Henry Ford Health provide diverse clinical data to train the model. The tool may also help patients monitor healing at home, reducing unnecessary return visits.

Led by Zhaojian Li, Red Cedar Distinguished Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, the AgriDynamic Robotics Apple Harvester addresses labor shortages and rising costs by cutting labor expenses by 20%. The system uses modular arms with soft suction cups to harvest fruit gently, day or night.

By helping growers harvest their crops at their peak, this MSU-driven innovation reduces the risk of crop loss from delayed harvesting.
