My parents are in the Apopka area need a tarp and some assistance getting it on.

She said that someone is providing free tarps in the Apopka area - does anyone have any information about what group or Agency we need to contact?

The ELPS district calendar indicates that students K-12 have every Friday off (with the exception of February 21st) and at least one long weekend (Friday and Monday off) per month. Is this a mistake or the actual schedule for this year?

The Thrill of Defeat 09/07/2023

Hello, my cherished families.

As we begin a new academic year and begin the juggling act of school, activities, and sports, I wanted to pause and remind you that it's okay not to have it all figured out.

So, today, I'm stepping aside to share an insightful article by Tim Alberta, featured in The Atlantic Magazine, and dive into a topic many might find surprising—the Detroit Lions. Yes, the team that's notoriously more familiar with defeat than victory. And even though I don't have any particular affinity for football, they remain my BELOVED home team.

And herein lies the point. Failure, as harsh as it may sound, holds immense value, particularly when it comes to teaching resilience, humility, and the importance of never giving up.

The Detroit Lions exemplify these qualities season after season, reminding us all that sometimes the most transformative wins are those that don't make it to the scoreboard. Loving a losing team has bonded us as a family and made us all a little grittier and able to understand the value of imperfect love.

Click through to read the full article and discover why supporting a team like the Detroit Lions offers life lessons that go far beyond the realm of sports.

The Thrill of Defeat My life has been shaped by watching the Detroit Lions lose. Who will I be if they start winning?

COVID-19 Therapeutics Locator 05/11/2022

I am sharing this in the hopes that it might be helpful to some of you out there! Take what is useful and leave the rest. :-)

I tested positive for COVID last week, and because I am immunocompromised, my doctor recommended that I start Paxlovid.

BUT, here’s the thing, the federal government is only dispensing it to certain pharmacies. My doctor was unaware of this and sent it to a place that did not have the medication. It took me a couple days to sort out how to get the script filled.

I am glad that I finally started the medicine because what had been a very mild case became a little scary yesterday (day 5). However, I woke up this morning feeling much better - I am just amazed! Yay for science and medicine!

There is now an abundance of therapeutics, but not all doctors are aware of that or know which pharmacies have the medication.
The Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response has a website with a COVID-19 Therapeutics locator you can use to find a pharmacy near you that has the medication in stock.

Of course, everyone should talk to their doctors about the medication and decide what is best for them. In preparation for that conversation with the medical provider, I recommend the following:

1) Go onto the ASPR website and locate a pharmacy with the medicine in stock. https://covid-19-therapeutics-locator-dhhs.hub.arcgis.com/
2) Call the pharmacy to verify that they have it in their current inventory.
3) If you decide to take the medication, have the doctor’s office send the script to the pharmacy you verified has it in stock.

There are some side effects and medication interactions, but I am pretty sure that, in my case, the medicine kept me from being hospitalized.

I hope this information is helpful, but I’d be happy to answer any questions!

Stay well and safe out there!
