💔Today is a day we never saw coming💔

Originally found as a stray in Atkins, Benny came to us about a month ago and quickly wiggled his way into our hearts. He had since been living in a wonderful foster home and was just waiting for his forever.

This morning, we received a heartbreaking call. Benny had passed away overnight. This is a first for us as a rescue (having a dog pass unexpectedly) and we are all absolutely devastated.

He was taken to Avenue Veterinary Clinic, where Dr. Mallen and her staff treated him with incredible compassion and performed a necropsy to help us understand what happened. Everything came back normal for the most part, other than a very slightly enlarged heart. Based on those findings, the vet believes he likely had an underlying heart condition—possibly hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM)—which caused him to throw a clot. In dogs, this is similar to a sudden stroke. Given his age and history, it is very likely this was a genetic issue we would have had no way of knowing about until something like this happened.

As much as this hurts, it does give us some answers and reassurance that there was likely nothing anyone could have done to prevent it.

What brings us some comfort is knowing he didn’t pass alone or unloved. He got to leave the streets behind and experience safety, a warm bed, good food, and a foster home where he was spoiled and loved like family.

Please keep his foster and our team members who were directly involved in your thoughts today. This has been incredibly hard on everyone.

We will be having him privately cremated so his ashes and a paw print can be returned in his memory. His care today including the necropsy and cremation will total approximately $400.
