Long before rainbow crosswalks, Durham was marching for justice.
In 1981 in response to the murder of Ronald Antonevitch, Durham held its first gay pride march – the first public demonstration for gay civil rights in the state. The first “PrideFest” was held five years later, in June of 1986, on Duke University’s campus.
This longstanding tradition continues as an act of demanding equal justice.
