Autumn, the season of metal
As we passed the fall equinox, this season begins our season of the darkness, the yin cycle. This peaks with the winter solstice, and ends at the spring equinox. Autumn is a time for new inspiration, new academic studies, and an increasing awareness of internal processing. Now is a great time to finish projects and manifestations started during the Yang season, take what you have learned, and meditate in Yin season to plant new seeds during the winter season.
In Chinese Five Element theory, the autumn season is governed by the Metal Element, which includes the Lung and Large Intestine organ systems. These elements are associated with communication and the workings of the mind. Clear thinking, openness to new ideas, and while doing so through a relaxed state is the mediation to cultivate during this season. The balance of intake, through inhaling and digestion of both physical food as well as our emotions, and the output of exhaling, physical activity and elimination are crucial to staying healthy to regulate the metal elements.
Two herbals to drink through this season to support the Lungs and Large Intestine
Burdock Root: A tonic, diuretic and an alterative. This has been used for chronic skin disorders such as eczema and acne blemishes, and general Lung health.
Comfrey: This herb is high in protein, vitamins, and minerals and is a soothing expectorant when there is mucus in the system.
Coltsfood: A great Lung tonic, however, most tonics take a longer time period to aid in support, over a one month or three time period. (Perfect for the metal season)
