The Power of Our Words⁣

“You will not be able to speak until the day these things take place, because you did not believe my words.”⁣
Luke 1:20⁣

An old preacher in the Bible had a life-changing encounter with the angel Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God. Gabriel brought astonishing news. This preacher and his wife, long past childbearing age, would soon have a son. Shocked, the preacher questioned, “How can this be at our age?” (Luke 1:18). It seemed impossible in human terms, yet God had already determined to make it happen.⁣

That question stirred a powerful response from Gabriel. He declared that the preacher would be unable to speak until the baby was born (Luke 1:20). This was not a punishment but a divine safeguard to protect the promise from being thwarted by words of unbelief. God’s plan was too important to risk interference—this child, John, would prepare the way for the Savior of the world.⁣

This account teaches us about the power of our words. Proverbs tells us, “The power of life and death is in the tongue” (Proverbs 18:21). Our words can either align with God’s promises or create obstacles. How often do we unknowingly sabotage God’s work by saying, “I don’t see how this will happen” or “We are never going to make it”? When our words contradict His Word, we risk blocking the very blessings He intends for us.⁣

We must learn to guard our tongues, speaking only what aligns with God’s truth. When we declare His promises, like “My God will supply all my needs” (Philippians 4:19) or “God is opening doors no one can close” (Revelation 3:8), we create space for miracles to unfold. Let’s follow the example of the preacher, who finally declared, “His name will be John” (Luke 1:63). In that moment, his lips were opened, and praise poured forth. What a reminder that it’s never too late to align our words with God’s plan! So, what are you speaking today? Let’s take a moment to ensure that each and every word aligns with the heart of our great God.
