Statement from the Durango School District Board of Education:
The Durango School District Board of Education is profoundly saddened and distressed that two innocent children in our community were tragically denied the fundamental right to safety while en route to their school communities this week.
The Durango School District Board of Education stands united in our unwavering commitment to the safety and well-being of every student. We affirm that all community students have the right to safe passage to and from school, regardless of their immigration status, background, or identity, and this right must never be compromised.
Our schools, and the routes students travel to reach them, must remain safe, welcoming environments for learning and belonging. We uphold the principle that schools should be protected areas, a concept that reinforces the shared responsibility for student safety across every level of government and community.
Learning cannot happen when students live in fear. We will continue to relentlessly advocate for the safety, dignity, and humanity of all children in our community.

👏👏👏 The endorsements keep rolling in! This one from Senator Michael Bennet who prior to the Senate served as the Superintendent of Denver Public Schools. He has long been a strong advocate for public education. We are all incredibly honored that both Colorado Senators have now endorsed the three of us for the Durango School Board. Well said Andrea for Durango 9-R. Thank you for being such a fierce advocate for our students, for schools, and for staff. We're so grateful to have your leadership in the School Board.
"Disrespecting our teachers, staff, and students with these false narratives around student performance and District safety is not leadership. It doesn't serve our kids and it’s not what’s needed on Durango’s School Board."
WE’RE WAY PAST MISCONCEPTIONS this Monday.
OUTSIDE MONEY and political operatives are flooding Durango with DISINFORMATION about our schools - and now they’re sending mass text messages across our community to spread it.
The PAC, “Neighbors for a Better Colorado,” backing the challengers in this race, is spreading DEMONSTRABLY FALSE claims about our schools and leadership.
These messages have been proven wrong repeatedly, yet they continue to double down and circulate lies. All the candidates who stand to benefit from it have been told and know better - and still have yet to speak out.
SILENCE in the face of disinformation is COMPLICITY.
Disrespecting our teachers, staff, and students with these false narratives around student performance and District safety is not leadership. It doesn't serve our kids and it’s not what’s needed on Durango’s School Board.
HERE'S THE TRUTH: our schools are growing stronger through hard work, honesty, and a focus on every student’s success.
Our staff and students deserve leaders who are working to build them up, not to tear their accomplishments down - leaders that deal in truth, not in deception and fear.
Enough is enough.
