Things ppl don’t know about tattooers:
How and what we get paid-
Talking about money with clients makes me uncomfortable but here’s the jist. Most tattooers working in a shop either pay a percentage or a chair rent, like a hairstylist. I’ve never done a chair rent so I can’t speak on that. As far as percentages, they can range from 50% to maybe 75% depending on the situation. So for example if your artist charges $100/hr it’s more like $50-75/hr. In the shops I’ve worked the shop provides most of the disposable stuff like gloves and paper towels. Things like inks, machines, needles, etc. are supplied by the artist. So after supplies that $100/hr could be closer to $35 or $50.

Tipping-this is one I think some ppl just don’t know about. I didn’t know when I started getting tattooed that this is a service industry like all the others. Theres no real answer about what to tip. Some ppl say 20% but there doesn’t seem to be any real etiquette. Anything is appreciated. $20 is cool. Anything above $50 feels like a good tip to me. And obviously it’s based on your experience. Did you feel welcomed and informed? Was it clean? Are you happy with your tattoo? Did you know tattooers can’t legally charge a service fee in PA? Did you know that someone still has to pay for the tax on that service? Guess who pays it. Yep, the artist. At the end of the year we pay the gov the tax on the services that WE performed. So while tipping isn’t required it’s sometimes a vital part of surviving as an artist or service provider in general. Just wanted to share some info on our industry that I don’t don’t think everyone is aware of.
