VETERANS DAY PROGRAM NOV. 11 IN DOVER. A surgeon who served during the Vietnam War will be the keynote speaker at the Veterans Day ceremony organized by Kent County Chapter 850, Vietnam Veterans of America, Monday, Nov. 11 at 2 p.m., at Kent County Veterans Memorial Park, South Little Creek Road, near International House of Pancakes, Dover. The ceremony is open to the public. Dr. Allen Davies, who served in Vietnam as a thoracic surgeon who occasionally rode on Medivac missions with dustoff rescue crews. His two tours in Vietnam included four days of surgery under fire at Khe Sanh. His book, "The Backside of the Firefight: A Surgeon’s Shop Notes from Vietnam," provides a candid description of his pre-Vietnam years as well. After his service in Vietnam, he practiced as a thoracic surgeon in Wilmington, retiring in 2015.
