While our dogs are considered domesticated, they can still be unpredictable and there is a chance that they may bite. In the state of Alabama if you have a pet and they do bite, you typically get the “one bite rule” where you are not liable if your pet acts out of character and bites someone. However if your pet has a history of biting then you are on notice and can be held liable for damages. On the other hand if you have a dog that is considered a “vicious breed” under the law if they bite even one time, then you can be held liable for damages.
Another thing you should know is that if you are a homeowner and someone gets bit on your property, a lot of times your homeowners policy may cover injuries to someone who is bit on your property. We would advise that if you have a dog you review your policy to make sure you know what is covered.
