We are finishing out the week with the Doosan lathe tackling some 316 stainless steel. We were running parts on both sides of a piece of stock so we could drill and bore the ID while turning the OD in the same operation. This allowed us to keep them concentric. In order to achieve the finished product, we had to cut them in half and face them to length. Unfortunately, the bar stock is too large to fit in the spindle, so the part couldn’t just be machined and parted off the bar stock in the lathe.

These pieces here are part of an assembly we are working on in the shop currently. They require only the top and bottom faces to be painted. Instead of masking off all the machined surfaces during painting we opted to machine a wooden plug for the bore and cut the outer profile in a pc of plywood to fit over the part, so the paint only hits the surfaces we want. This saved us a lot of time and it worked flawlessly.

Today we were able to utilize our 5th axis machine to knock out this aluminum part in one quick and smooth operation! The 5th axis allowed us to machine the inside, outside, and top surface. After completing the top counterbored holes, the machine turned the part 90 degrees, front to back, and then rotated 360 degrees, left to right, to complete the taped side holes. The taped side holes are m2 x .4, and while that might seem small, they are nowhere near the smallest holes we have taped. Once the part was completed, we cut the part off from the piece of stock that was in the 5th axis vise.
